MURFREESBORO, TN (WDAM) _ The University of Southern Mississippi Lady Eagles have had trouble getting the ball in the basket since the start of Conference USA play, and Thursday night was no different.

For a third consecutive game, USM was limited to less than 50 points, falling 66-49 to Middle Tennessee State University.

The Lady Eagles (8-8, 0-3 C-USA) hung tough for the first 25 minutes or so with the Blue Raiders (12-4, 3-0), who are considered one of the favorites to win the league.

USM had whittled a seven-point halftime deficit to one, 45-44, with 5 minutes, 29 seconds, left in the third period on a 3-pointer by junior point guard Shonte Hailes (six points, six assists).

But five Lady Eagles’ turnovers fed a 13-0 MTSU flurry that closed the third quarter and left the Blue Raiders up 58-44 heading into the final period.

USM got within 11 points early in the quarter, but would pull no closer as the Lady Eagles dropped their fourth consecutive game.

Senior swingman Megan Brown scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Lady Eagles, and junior wing Alaire Mayze added 11 points.

Four of MTSU’s starting five finished with at least 12 points, including senior guard A’Queen Hayes with 12 points, six assists and five rebounds.

Freshman guard Taylor Sutton has 15 points, senior guard Jess Louro had 16 points and senior forward Alex Johnson had 16 points and five rebounds.
